Giang’s Bakery App
Case Study

1. My Role

As the sole designer, I took on the UX jack of all trades role for the Giang’s Bakery app. I conducted user research, created design concepts, developed wireframes and prototypes, performed user testing, and finalized the polished designs. By taking on all aspects of the project, I ensured a cohesive and consistent user experience.

2. Project Goal

The goal of the project was to design an app for Giang’s Bakery, a single-owner bakery located in Ecopark, a suburb outside Hanoi, Vietnam, that could provide local residents convenience and the ability to personalize cake orders easily and intuitively. The aim was to provide a seamless and enjoyable user experience while differentiating the bakery by offering a unique cake personalization feature.

3. Target Audience

The target audience for the Giang’s Bakery app was primarily working adults residing in Ecopark who were seeking convenient and time-efficient options for ordering customized cakes. The app aimed to cater to customers who valued personalized cake designs and flavors, providing them with a convenient and simple cake customization experience.

4. Key Challenges and Constraints

One of the key challenges was to design a cake personalization process that was user-friendly and straightforward, while also accounting for the limitations of the bakery’s available options. Considerable time constraints on the designer’s side also played an important role on the design of the app.

5. Research Conducted

Research was conducted through user interviews and usability studies to gain insights into user preferences, pain points, and expectations. The research aimed to uncover user needs, preferences for customization, and identify areas of improvement in the existing ordering process.

6. Initial Concepts & Design Strategy

Based on the research findings, the design strategy focused on creating a streamlined cake personalization process with clear steps and prominent options.

The personalization process was inspired by and replicated a design funnel used to guide customers through the steps of a process until a purchase is completed. The aim was to ensure that users could easily navigate through the customization process and make choices that aligned with their preferences.

7. Sketches and Wireframes

Low-fidelity sketches and wireframes were created to visualize the app’s interface, layout, and flow. These included screens depicting the cake personalization process, showcasing the arrangement of options, buttons, and navigation elements.

8. Results of User Testing

User testing revealed positive feedback regarding the ease of navigation and customization process. However, some participants suggested improvements such as enhancing the visibility of edit buttons, additional opportunities to edit choices and a preview of the final cake right before payment. These insights helped refine the design to address user concerns and enhance the overall user experience.

9. Final Polished Design

The final polished designs included high-fidelity mockups and an interactive prototypes of the Giang’s Bakery app. The final prototype showcased the refined user interface, improved visibility of edit buttons, and the addition of a preview feature. The designs aimed to provide a visually appealing and intuitive experience for users.

10. Conclusion

Through the design process, it was evident that a well-designed and user-friendly app for Giang’s Bakery could enhance the cake personalization experience for customers. The project demonstrated the importance of user research, iterative design, and incorporating user feedback. Moving forward, potential next steps could include designing the secondary features of the app, conducting usability testing of the same and developing a functional version of the app.
